This department was formed following the 9/11 attacks of 2001. The program is funded by the Homeland Security’s Public Health Preparedness Grant which is administered through the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Locally, this department is responsible for county disease surveillance and planning for the department’s emergency response to natural or man made accidents. Public Health and education are key focus areas of this group. We work closely with hospitals, schools, child-care agencies, labs, and private providers to quickly identify outbreaks of infectious diseases or other health-related emergencies.
In 2006 the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness program was added to this grant. This position is responsible for writing the Pandemic Response Plan for the health department and assisting the business and private sector in the development of pandemic response plans.
